Back to the garden!

Last weekend I was lost. I had the time but nothing which had to be done in the garden. All those weeks of hard work paid off. For a short time I can sit and watch things grow. Just me and a cup of coffee sitting on the deck poking around my planters on the deck while staring at the garden below. Quietness, stillness, beauty, and a sense of accomplishment. Life is good! I quickly covered that problem by going out for 3 more self watering window boxes (for another crop of lettuce, radish, carrots, and spinach). Good thing I have 3 extra bags of dirt left over. Can't let them go to waste!

I created a spreadsheet of all the veggies and when to start seeds, sow directly into the ground, and when to transplant. Today I'm headed out to pick up some fall seeds. I'm also on the lookout for some Easter Egg Radish Seeds which I might have to buy online. (crossing my fingers!)

I've taken lots of pictures of my garden. You'll see how things have grown, problem areas, and garden critters. If you have a blog full of garden pictures, hints/tips please leave a comment, I'd love to pop over and see what you've been doing!

Welcome to my June garden update...

Up on deck first (litterally!) these are my window boxes on the deck railing.
Radish:
Photobucket

One seems to have sprouted higher than the others and I almost pulled it out thinking it was a weed. Little sucker might end up being my first harvest of the season soon!
Photobucket

Lettuce: Here are some leaf lettuces simpson & mixed all planted mid April
Simpson: (not doing as well as the mixed)
Photobucket

Mixed
Photobucket

I planed a second crop last week next to the mint in one of my new self watering window boxes
Photobucket

Carrots
Photobucket

Basil, I pinched the tops and they have been getting bush...I just wish what ever is eating them would stop, could it be the catiplillars? I've been regularly watering the whole deck to blast away the critters, it's gotten better.
Photobucket

Thyme which I loved having and using in Chicken dishes, planted it before I stopped eating meat. Oh well!
Photobucket

Parsley, seriously growing great! I've been watching tiny shoots pop up all the time.
Photobucket

Mint, I'm sad that it's not the mint my father planted in our grandmothers house (house has been sold long ago) but at least this might stick around longer. Any time I transplanted mint from her house it never came back.
Photobucket

Spinach, seems a bit sad huh! I spread out the seedlings and there are a few new seeds sown (I think!). I've never done spinach before so I don't know if I'm overcrowding or if there is room for more. That's ok, I have a few rows down below in the raised bed area. Funny story on that down below.
Photobucket

I planted some Zinnia in hopes that it will make my oldest happy. She loves crysantamums and I don't think they will grow well here. So I thought this would be the closest thing for her.
Photobucket

Squash in a container, actually looks better then the one down below in the raised bed.
Photobucket

Onions red and white, am I crazy to try it this way? I drilled tons of holes on the bottom of this plastic under the bed box. We shall see what happens.
Photobucket

Heirloom tomato, I have 3 plants, 2 in containers 1 in the raised bed along with another generic tomato plant.
Photobucket

Here are the critters living 'la vida loco' on my cages above the tomato plants
Photobucket

While we are looking at critters, here's another one
Photobucket

SNAKE!
Photobucket
Oh wait, it's a stick! One day I was grabbing sticks and saw a zig zag one but then I realized it was a snake. Now all sticks are frightening to me! This one here got me, I actually jumped up because it was two feet away where I was about to step.

Peppers, I'm growing quite a variety I believe I have 5 total.
Photobucket

And here are the ones I started from seed, should have started them earlier! 2 of 3 survived the transplant.
Photobucket

Eggplant, at least I hope it is.
Photobucket

Squash, 3 plants in a 12 x 12 area, too many in too small a space?
Photobucket

Hello carrots! kind of crowded but I'll pull some for a early harvest
Photobucket

Romaine, only 2 of the 3 planted survived but I have 2 more to plant, just wanted to space them out.
Photobucket

Brussel sprouts...my oopsie planting. Notice the lettuce in the background and spinach in the foreground. Forgot I planted seeds there before I added the 4 sprout transplants! Should be ok.
Photobucket

On the side of the house is my heirloom rhubarb. I believe I can call it that because the plant has been around for over 50 years, started in my mother in laws mom's garden.
Photobucket

I have a smaller raised bed against the house, gives partial shade so I might have to figure out what will work better there.
Right now I have cucumbers
Photobucket

Strawberries
Photobucket

Blueberry bush, poor thing needs to be weeded. I'll tend to it this weekend.
Photobucket

What's wrong with my poor squash plant? Looks like the stem has split. I'm going to dig it up so it doesn't hurt the other plant nearby.
Photobucket
Another picture:
Photobucket

We are growing branches, kidding! Just our huge pile due to trees being cut down, storms, and pruning. It would be nice to chip them all but getting a machine down below would be tough.
Photobucket

This is me & my youngest walking down toward the raised bed
Photobucket

I also planted some calla lily bulbs but there's not much to look at, plus my greenbeen bush seeds aren't doing anything yet, I may have planted them too late.
Photobucket

From up on the deck looking down to the 4 x 4 raised bed garden.
Photobucket

Future dreams:
I have a pile of rocks near a larger rock. Wouldn't it be great for daffodils and tulips? What plants would be good here? I'd love some suggestions.

My Green Thumb!

I love gardening, zone 6. After the kids came, my gardening stopped. This year I finally had the time to start it up again plus I have 3 helpers! I'd love to hear your garden stories, what you grow, any tips etc.

My garden story: I grew up watching and helping my grandmother garden. She mainly had roses, a lily of the valley bed which had to be cut back a lot, and tons of beans. When I first moved into my own home I had a tiny garden on the side of the house, I also had window boxes full of leaf lettuces and large pots filled with tomato plants on the deck. The best lunches I had then were cherry tomatoes and lettuce straight off the deck and eaten while still warm from the sun! I became pregnant and I did try one year but listening to a baby monitor while outside was too hard as I kept running inside ever time I heard her make the slightest noise in her sleep. Now 8 years later I've gone full speed. I missed the boat on getting potatoes started as all the online and nurseries are already sold out of tubors. I couldn't find bush beans (yeah I forgot to start them from seed!). I had to go to 4 different places to get my plants as they were sold out of a lot of different vegetables & herbs. With the bad economy it seems like everyone is gardening to save money.

This is my garden cart.

I have tons of window boxes on my deck filled with lettuce, mixed lettuce, radish, carrots, spinach, and herbs. Some of them are only half filled, I'm planting more seeds each month to space out the harvest. The best part is I have plenty of room for more boxes on the side railings!

Here are my pole beans that I started from seed. Poor things are really stringy but it's all I have this year for beans.

I still have more plants to put into the garden. Lettuce, brussel sprouts, chives. I've got more squash, onions, and eggplant coming today.

Here are some heritage tomato plants, Black Prince, Wild Cherry, Italian Heirloom, Northern Lights. I'm sooooo lucky to get these. Someone I know grew them from seed! Next year I'll be getting some more heritage seeds online so I can have a tri colored cherry/pear salad. I hope to save some seeds from these plants so I can start them on my own next year. I hope to be swapping seedlings with her next year.

Here is my 4 x 4 raised garden bed. I got the idea from Square Foot Gardening. This picture shows me using twigs to map out the grid. I will remove them once everything is planted. So far I have tomato, green bell pepper, jalepeno, eggplant, squash, carrots, lettuce, spinach.

Last night we had frost so I covered up my plants with newspaper and boxes. I haven't gone down to check yet but I think they are ok.

Here are my heirloom rhubarb. Every Mother's Day I make a Strawberrry-Rhubarb pie. This year I was able to share my wealth of stalks with many people (not everyone is a fan of the tart flavor). I want to try to save the seeds this year. I know it's better to transplant roots for quicker production (starting from seed you have to wait 3 years for edible stalks, transplants only 2 years) but if I can share a heirloom variety with others that would make me really happy. If all goes well I'll make another post in fall to see if anyone would like seeds. I should get a picture when the 5 foot seed bolts up!

I'm starting marigold from seed, the easiest flowering plant to do that with.

I've got a beautiful cherry tree in my front yard, this isn't the greatest picture as the blossoms are falling off. Not exactly part of a garden but it really puts a splash of color onto the lawn!

This year we have a humming bird feeder (mainly for looks I doubt we will get any birds) That's also where I planted Morning Glory seeds. They trail up onto my railing and look spectacular. I hope to get a picture when that happens.

I've got varigated hostas (right side) that do very well and I think those are autumn splendor (left side), they turn pink in the fall.

Here are my full green hostas (all my hostas were transplanted from my mother in law's garden) next to them are lilly's (I think). It's crowded but I'm not transplanting anything until we fix the walk way.

Lately I've been reading up on companion gardening, and what not to put near other plants. Did you know that a lot of plants don't like pole beans and onions? Frightening (kidding!). I need to start working on what I'd like for my fall garden.

Some tips I can share:

~pinch off the top of your basil plants (those tiny leaves on the very tip) and your plant will become bushy with lots of leaves!

~pull those seed shoots when your rhubarb bolts and you'll prolong the season. Also pull your larger stalks/leaves first so the sun can get to the newer growth underneath to prevent them from becoming stringy.

~keep pulling beans as they get mature to keep your plant producing more

Well, that's a bit of my garden. I'd love it if you could share yours. If you have a gardening blog, I'd really love to take a look! Please post a comment with a link. Do you know some great sites with gardening tips, go ahead and leave a comment!

Going out to eat.

Hubby and I went out on a date last Saturday night (finally)! I checked online to see what the chain restaurants had to eat that didn't include meat or cheese.....practically nothing. It seems that if you want to eat healthy your choice is grilled salmon, rice, and veggies. So boring! I ended up with grilled shrimp & fettucini. Can someone say cholesterol?! There were six little shrimps on my plate poking out of a bunch of drowned pasta. It was ok, I was happy being out with hubby. The Long Island Iced Tea helped! After dinner we went out for a bike rack for the van and some odds & ends. Nothing exciting, just spending time alone together with out being interrupted or stopping sibling fights. Hubby was worried about the littlest one, I wasn't....I knew she'd be ok and she was. We were out less than 3 hours.

This Saturday I'm going to make the hot artichoke/spinach dip we ate as an appetizer and I don't care if it has cheese in it! I'm doing good with my diet so far and look forward to a break. I lost almost 2 pounds. Of course that doesn't mean anything because a normal body weight fluctuates 2 pounds throughout the day.

It's going to be a great sunny/hot weekend. Hubby is going to level out the garden area for my 4 x 4 frame. We are trying out "square foot gardening". I need to take pictures along the way. The girls are helping by planting seeds and watering. We are getting plants ready to be transplanted but many plants will be bought at the store. I'm really looking forward to seeing the garden grow and watching the girls get excited about being able to pick and eat our dinner/snacks. Fun for all!

Big bowl of salad and frustrations

Yesterday's lunch was a huge bowl filled with spinach, 2 egg whites from the Easter bunny, tomato, radish, onion, carrot, broccoli, 6 kalamatra olives (only 1% saturated fat) and green beans with 2 squishes of fat free/lo cal dressing. Healthy, yummy but wouldn't want to eat this every day. Mental note for next time: whole wheat garlic croutons.

We went to the library too and boy was it stressful. The 2 1/2 year old decides many times to run instead of walk and then when I get to her, she fusses too loudly. I don't know what to do with her. She also acted up at the bank while I had to turn in some information. It's hard to make such a young kid understand.

So for our next library visit tomorrow, my task is to have a very long talk with her in the car while sitting in the library parking lot. Before we go in, she will have to listen to what not to do and what will happen if she does. If she does act up, then I need to follow through (sitting in the car with her while the other 2 finish the library activity planned). I can't punish the older two just because I can't handle the youngest. Is it normal for a 2 1/2 year old to wake up at 7am and go to bed at 10:30/11pm with no nap during the day?

Today was catch up on emails day, clean the house, make thank you cards for the Easter stuff the girls received, move appliances on counter tops while wondering how the counter can get so dirty underneath, yuck!

Dinner will be spagetti squash, I can't wait till the end of the week to have it so the other meals are being pushed out. The family can have meatballs with theirs, I'll have the crumpled veggie "meat" stuff. I'll make garlic bread but only my piece will be little and we can round it off with a salad. I better start making that sauce!

insert witty title here!

Well my veggie broth tastes horrible! Next time I'm going to follow a recipe! Just in case I can salvage it, I'm going to puree the veggies and mix it in with the broth.

Last nights tofu tasted good. I marinated it in garlic, lime juice, sesame oil, lite soy sauce and corn starch to thicken it. I did 2 pieces so there's one for today which will have more of a marinade flavor due to it sitting over night. I purchased a split pack which is great for me and nothing goes to waste. Of course the package say's serves 5 but I split the blocks into 2 so I'll have to figure out the fat content for 4. I was surprised tofu had saturated fat. That's what I'm trying to avoid. But....it has a good amount of calcium, fiber, and iron which makes it worth it and better than chicken.

Yesterday was spent running errands and grocery shopping. More errands today. I still need to catch up on emails/PM's. Hopefully it won't rain so I can take the girls riding. Maybe I'll pick up a car bike rack myself. If not, I'll just bring the girls bikes to a safer area to ride. The ride yesterday was fun, only one scare and that was my oldest not following directions and made an immediate turn right as a car was coming by. Yikes. The middle one uses training wheels, it was so cute, she got stuck a few times. Looks like mommy needs to figure out how to raise them a little. I need to get a pinwheel or something that the littlest one can hold so she has something fun to do. All she can do is wave to people and bark at dogs (yeah, should I be worried about that?!!).

I haven't done Wii Fit since Thursday, oopsie. At least I went riding yesterday so I was active. Ok, ok. I'll do the Fit right now! I have a movie, Brideshead Revisited which I'll watch while doing the free step. I'll double up and do an hour!

Tonights dinner theme is New York (yesterday was Hawaii & we had pineapple chicken stir fry). So it's hot dogs, but my middle one loves corn dogs so we are making it the Rachael Ray style with jiffy corn muffin mix & baking them in the oven. Hubby has a roll so he can have a plain dog, he's not into corn muffins. Later on we have soft baked pretzels to make, just like on the streets of NY! We are also having home baked fries and the veggie platter with ranch dressing dip (no dip for me). I'm having the other half of marinated tofu in place of the dog.

Kids are waking up....time to start the busy day!
